The Spokes project collects discarded or second hand bicycles from a variety of sources and strips them down, retaining the good parts and then rebuilds, services and checks bikes before selling them on as cheap "first" bicycles.
Spokes reduces the demand on landfill by environmental services and promotes a healthy form of transport or activity. It supplies affordable bicycles for families on low incomes or for people who may not have ridden a bike for a number of years and wish to try out one without initially committing to a more serious investment. The trainees who work on the bikes start off with an introduction course which takes through health and safety at work procedures and familiarizes them with the workshop and its equipment. The trainees then progress to learning about maintenance and construction of a bicycle and through this learn to take pride in their work and enjoy working with colleagues. Finished bikes are road and safety checked with a certificate and then sold, with the incoming funds used to help run the Spokes business
